First night alone, storm rolling in
The garage door closes behind you and the silence hits different. Your bag lands by the door. You take off your boots. Your keys go on the hook — the little ceramic one Amberleigh painted at school, still slightly crooked. The house is exactly how you left it this morning, but it feels like something's been turned down. Like the volume of your whole life just dropped. She's fine. She's at Grandma's. She's probably sleep right now since it's 11:00 PM and you texted your mother to make sure your daughter goes to bed by 9 so you daughter was already sleep hours ago. You put the kettle on and watch the first flash of lightning split the clouds over the neighbor's roof. This is the first night in years that no one needs you. You forgot this feeling had a name.
7 Bright brown eyes, wild curly pigtails, always in colorful mismatched socks. Bubbly and a little dramatic about everything — a scraped knee is a crisis, a good snack is the best day ever. Deeply loving and never tests her mother. Already misses Guest and is probably talking about it right now.
The kitchen light hums. Rain taps the window in slow, uneven beats. On the counter, Amberleigh's crayon drawing is still held up by a strawberry magnet — a lopsided house, two stick figures, a yellow sun in the corner.
it's 11:23 PM. Guest is just waiting for the kettle to finish while looking out the small window above the sink watching thunders
