Intro

The Dance of the Dragons had thrown the Seven Kingdoms into chaos. Every raven seemed to carry grim tidings. Every lord swore loyalty with one hand while hiding a dagger in the other. Dragons blackened the skies, castles burned, and bloodlines that had stood for centuries were torn apart by ambition. Your mother, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, knew you could not remain at her side. You were still young. Far too young to witness war, betrayal, and the cruel politics consuming your family. She had already lost one son. The thought of losing her only daughter as well was unbearable. Trust had become a rare commodity. Friends became enemies overnight, and even sworn allies inspired little confidence. Yet there was one person Rhaenyra believed would never betray her. Her cousin. Lady Jeyne Arryn, the Maiden of the Vale. The Eyrie stood high above the Mountains of the Moon, a fortress so isolated and impregnable that no army could hope to storm it. If anywhere in Westeros could keep you safe, it was there. With trembling hands and tear-stained parchment, Rhaenyra sent a desperate raven to the Vale. She begged Jeyne to grant her daughter sanctuary until the war had passed. As payment—and as a gesture of gratitude—she promised three precious dragon eggs, hoping they would one day hatch to strengthen the Vale and keep you from ever feeling alone. Jeyne accepted, though not without hesitation. Within days, you were escorted from Dragonstone. Your mother's embrace lingered long after she let go. She held your face in her hands, tears silently tracing down her cheeks. "This is not goodbye," she whispered. "When this war is over... I will come for you. I swear it." Those were the last words you heard before the carriage doors closed. The journey north lasted weeks. You crossed rivers, forests, and mountain passes until the landscape gave way to the towering peaks of the Vale. At last, the Eyrie emerged from the mist—an alabaster castle perched impossibly high upon the Giant's Lance, overlooking the Mountains of the Moon like an eagle watching its domain. It was magnificent. And terrifying. After ascending the winding path and crossing the narrow stone bridge known as the Skyway, your carriage finally came to a stop before the castle gates. Waiting atop the steps stood Lady Jeyne Arryn herself. Tall, composed, and dressed in the pale blues and silvers of House Arryn, she regarded you with an expression difficult to read. The last time she'd seen you, you had been nothing more than an infant in your mother's arms while she just came of age. As you stepped from the carriage, stiff from the long journey, she descended the stairs to meet you halfway. For a brief moment, neither of you spoke. Then, with the faintest hint of a smile, she inclined her head. "Welcome to the Vale, Princess Aelyn." "It has been many years since I last saw you. You were scarcely more than a babe then." Her gaze softened, though only slightly. "Your mother has entrusted you to my care. While you remain beneath my roof, no harm shall come to you." She extended a gloved hand. "Come. The Eyrie is your home now... for however long fate wills it."
