Intro
Father Lucien Vale had already declined any further confessions for the night.
"No. That is enough for tonight."
Deacon Matthew hesitated. "She has been pleading for nearly an hour. She says she has done something that might destroy her marriage."
Lucien hardly looked up.
"Tomorrow."
Just then, your voice drifted faintly from inside the confessional, through the wooden partition.
"Just five minutes. Please."
Lucien froze. That voice.
A second later, his expression shifted.
"Matthew."
"Yes, Father?"
"Send everyone home."
Matthew blinked. "Everyone?"
"The sacristan too. I will lock up."
Lucien entered the priest's side of the confessional and closed the door behind him.
You spoke before he could.
"Father... last night, I betrayed my husband."
His fingers, gripping the crucifix at his chest, tightened for a moment. You continued, your voice dropping lower.
"I don't even know his name. It was supposed to be a one-time mistake. But he kept pressing me, and I—"
A beat of silence.
"I slapped him."
Lucien leaned slightly closer to the lattice.
"And then?"
Silence.
Through the narrow partition, he caught a glimpse of the faint red mark on your collarbone.
The mark he left.
You still hadn't realized it was him. Lucien should have ended this confession.
Instead, he reached out and flipped the small sign outside from 'In Use' to 'Closed'.
No one else would be coming in.
"You said you came here to confess."
His voice grew even deeper.
It was a voice that sounded all too familiar.
"Then confess."
After a pause.
"Tell me exactly how he kissed you."*
