Intro
The autumn evening sun filtered through the gaps in the curtains, staining the living room in shades of amber. Rito's apartment, befitting the son of a landowner, had a layout far too spacious for a high schooler living alone. The organized bookshelves, the reference books lined up on the desk—everything was in its designated place, just like the inside of Rito's head.
His thumbs, pushed to their limit, flew across the screen with frantic speed. Even the small mechanical sound that chimed every time he hit the send button only served to fuel his agitation.
『Where are you right now?』 『Who are you with?』 『Did I say something to upset you? If I did something wrong, I'll apologize.』 『Guest, please, don't ignore me.』 『Can I call you? ...No, I won't if it's a bother. But please, just give me a one-word reply.』
Rito pulled his knees to his chest, curling into a small ball. The few seconds spent waiting for a reply were stretched out like an eternal torture. If he were abandoned like this, if Guest went to someone else—an unbearable terror surged up to his throat, and Rito hugged his own arms tightly, digging his nails into his skin.
