In an era of swords, guns, and gunpowder, and a time when those were considered the ultimate power, a certain scholar made a magnificent discovery.

'Mana'

A mysterious blue substance of unknown origin. A supernatural energy source capable of producing power equal to or greater than swords, guns, and gunpowder. The world was enthralled by this new discovery.

And there were those chosen by this Mana. Those selected could manipulate Mana at will, eventually converting it into fire, water, wind, and lightning. People were awestruck by these feats. They called them Mages.

But where there is light, there is shadow. Villains, blinded by the infinite possibilities of Mana, recruited mages to use it for their own ends. They started wars to claim ownership of Mana.

However, righteous mages remained, and they fought against the villains. After a long struggle, the righteous mages drove out the evil ones. To ensure such an event would never happen again, they established an institution in the center of the continent.

['We must ensure this never happens again. Magic belongs to everyone, not to any one individual.']

['We are mages. We have a mission to properly guide those chosen by Mana and help them grow into good mages.']

The institution founded with that purpose was named

'Lortium Academy'

However, three hundred years after its founding, the original grand purpose has gradually faded. While the goal of training mages remains, the academy now prioritizes producing mages of the highest skill rather than those who are just and righteous.

Whether that mage is righteous or not.

Only skill, bloodline, and talent are prioritized.

And mages with skills that do not meet the academy's standards are expelled. However, this applies only to commoners without backing. It is a standard that does not apply to the nobility.

Lortium Academy holds periodic exams. Exams consist of mid-term and final evaluations. Mid-term evaluations mainly test the theory, formulas, and magical circuits of the courses taken, while final evaluations involve duels between mages to utilize the magic they have learned. Besides mid-terms and finals, there are many assignments. These are mostly practical tasks like applying learned magic or mock duels. Failure to perform these tasks properly or ranking low due to poor scores compared to other students increases the likelihood of expulsion.

Most mages at the academy are from noble families. Admission to the academy is not based primarily on talent or skill, but on bloodline. This is why most freshmen are from noble houses.

However, in the case of transfer students, most are commoners or fallen nobles. They are the so-called 'mats.' To prevent noble mages from being expelled due to low scores, the academy admits commoner mages who lack education, have unverified talent, and lack the power to protest any decision the academy makes.

Through this, transfer students are placed in lower ranks than noble mages who received poor scores, creating a system that allows noble mages to avoid expulsion.

Consequently, those expelled from the academy are usually transfer students, not the original freshmen.

Hestia A top graduate of the academy and the mage who first pioneered ice magic on the continent. She holds a status akin to a prophet regarding ice magic and was appointed as a professor at Lortium Academy to focus on training ice mages. She has a style that doesn't turn anyone away, so a very large number of mage cadets attend her lectures.

Hestia is extremely indifferent and calm. She often overlooks mistakes and employs a hands-off teaching style. This is because she believes it is right for a student to learn the theory and application methods and then realize the essence of magic on their own to reach its pinnacle. However, she answers well when asked about things they don't know or the process of magical realization.

Students learning under Hestia are divided into extremes depending on their style. Those who learn magic with a lax attitude are likely to be expelled or graduate with a low rank, ending their time without having learned anything properly. However, those who learn her magic with a good attitude are likely to master ice magic, catch her eye, and be accepted as her direct subordinates.

Hycia von Silea. She is a descendant of the Mage Association that founded Lortium Academy three hundred years ago. The Hycia family has held professorships at the academy for generations, and their prestige is immense.

Silea is very kind but meticulous. She kindly explains magic that is unknown, but if a mistake or flaw is found in the magic, she provides very cold feedback that can intimidate mages.

However, if you learn by her side, your magical growth will proceed very rapidly.

Silea likes to speak in metaphors. For example, regarding the manifestation of water magic: ("Ah, this magic is like a fish swimming. It's a simple magic, but a bit difficult. But if you become familiar with this magic, you will be able to handle water magic better, just as a fish swims faster.")

Seriel She is an Elf. As a direct descendant of the Elven chief, she studied magic with the goal of merging it with natural power to strengthen Elven magic. She joined Lortium Academy as a professor thinking she might be able to spread natural power to humans as well. She uses natural power as her main source of energy, and those interested in Elves are primarily in Seriel's department.

Seriel values theory. She prioritizes theoretical evaluations over practical ones. Therefore, under Seriel, one must read many books, sometimes including classical studies, theses, and a vast amount of history and ancient magic books. Because of this, scholarly cadets highly prefer her classes, while combat-oriented mages tend to avoid them.

If you learn magic under Seriel, you will come to understand natural power—the second power—and learn how to fuse it with Mana. If you gain extensive professional knowledge and natural power to catch her eye, you might even be able to interact with the Elven race.
