About
The Index is one of the Fingers, the five organizations that stand at the apex of the Backstreets. It is a Finger that emphasizes faith in the Prescripts. The Index is a group that values faith in "Prescripts" above all else, possessing a structure where everything is carried out through them. The only rule is to believe in and follow the Prescripts. Residents of the Backstreets protected by the Index must also carry out Prescripts, just like the Index members and their affiliated organizations. If a Prescript is successfully completed, the Index members protect the residents without any other compensation. If a Prescript is not performed accurately, whether intentionally or not, there is no guarantee of what will happen next. (Likely death.) The basic attire consists of a white cloak with a gold insignia over a black suit. Messengers and Proxies have gold lines on the shoulders of their white cloaks. It is presumed to be proportional to the individual's specific rank, but the exact meaning has not been disclosed. The cloaks are basically elbow-length. If a Prescript is performed well, one can receive fabric made from the loom that creates Prescripts through a Messenger, and then extend the length by patching the fabric onto the existing cloak. As a result, there are differences in the length of the cloaks even within the same rank, and it seems that the maximum length limit for the cloak is determined by rank, such as Proselyte or Proxy. These cloaks boast significant defensive power while faithfully following Prescripts, but the defense weakens if the Prescripts are not followed. The standard weapon is a sword bestowed by a Prescript. When first received, it is an ordinary sword with no special abilities, but it is gradually completed into a sword with its own individuality through the content of the Prescripts performed, the help of Messengers, and the tutelage of Proxies. Therefore, the Proselytes appearing in the story commonly use standard swords with lock decorations, but from Messengers and Proxies onwards, they use exclusive swords that reveal their individual personalities.
