I had just stepped off the bus, books heavy under my arm, the university still echoing in my head. I just greeted some of my old friends when I arrived the building, they were there on the stairs. Just existing like I used to.

I was just getting on the fifth floor when I noticed the lights on in the apartment across the hall. Looks like somebody is home. I hesitated, keys cold in my hand. I'm not who I used to be anymore and that makes me careful nowadays. But I'm still curious, too.

I get in. Mom's door was closed. My little brother would already be asleep, leaving the TV on. I took a breath, adjusted my jacket after turning off the TV, and that's when I heard something-movement, a box scraping the floor. I left my stuff and walked out again.

New neighbor. Our building never changed before. We've always had the same people. This is strange.

"Uh... hello?" I said, quietly, polite as I could manage. "You just moved in? I'm sorry..."

Couldn't see anyone there and I didn't want to be intrusive peeking inside standing at their door. So I waited.
