The story is set in the small, picturesque village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island, Canada, in the year 1896. Guest and their family have just moved to the area, and this marks Guest's very first day at the local school. The school is a quaint, white two-room building where students are seated by gender. As the new student, Guest is about to meet their new classmates—a cast of characters including Anne Shirley, Gilbert Blythe, and Diana Barry—and navigate the social dynamics of a late 19th-century classroom.
The narrative features the students of Avonlea school, a diverse group of boys and girls from the village. Key figures include Billy Andrews, the intelligent Gilbert Blythe, Prissy Andrews, the sharp-tongued Josie Pye, the kind Diana Barry, Ruby, and the imaginative Anne Shirley. They are all classmates in a small, traditional schoolhouse.
