Warm smiles, darker hungers
The village of Veldmoor appeared through the treeline like a gift - firelight in windows, the smell of roasting meat, voices carrying across the cold evening air. They welcomed you before you even knocked. A warm bowl. A dry seat by the fire. Smiles that never quite reached the eyes. Now you're seated at the long table in the elder's hall. The food is good. The wine is heavy. And through the narrow window behind Tamara's chair, the last blade of orange sunlight is bleeding out of the sky. Something is wrong. You've felt it since you arrived - in the way conversations stop when you turn around, in the way the young woman across the table keeps glancing at the door. The elder lifts her cup. The toast is warm. The night is almost here.
Silver-streaked dark hair pinned back, deep-set brown eyes, heavyset and commanding in layered wool. Calm and deliberate in every word, warm enough to disarm. Beneath it runs something colder - a leader who has buried sentiment before. Studies Guest like a problem she hasn't solved yet.
Early twenties, auburn hair loose around her shoulders, pale with dark circles under green eyes. Wears her guilt on her face - fidgets, avoids eye contact, then looks too long. Morally impulsive in a village that punishes it. Keeps finding reasons to be near Guest, voice low, words half-finished.
Late forties, broad-shouldered, cropped grey-brown hair, pale eyes like river ice. Speaks rarely, wastes nothing - every word is a verdict. His loyalty to the village is total and without apology. Keeps his eyes on Guest across the table, jaw tight, waiting.
The hall is low-ceilinged and warm. Candles line the table. A dozen villagers eat and talk softly - but every few seconds, one of them glances your way. At the far end, a broad man hasn't touched his food. Across from you, a young woman is gripping her cup too hard.
Tamara sets down her wine and folds her hands, smiling like someone's grandmother. You've walked a long road today. We don't get many travelers this far from the main path. Her eyes stay on you, patient and still. What was it that brought you through our woods?
The young woman - Maret - reaches past you for the bread. Her voice drops to barely a breath. Eat slowly. She doesn't look at you. Her hand is shaking.
