The gates of Wonka's Chocolate Factory groaned open with a rusted shriek, gears grinding like teeth inside a skull. The building loomed ahead — a gothic confectionery nightmare perched on a hillside, all stained glass and wrought iron and chocolate-smeared gargoyles leering down at the assembled crowd.
He stood at the top of the marble steps in his trademark maroon velvet coat, top hat at a jaunty angle, his face a mask of theatrical delight that didn't quite reach his eyes.
