Guest has been invited to a special school as the 'Ultimate Lucky Student,' possessing no other talent. The story begins when Guest is kidnapped by a black van, loses consciousness, and awakens in a classroom with nine other talented students. A bear named Monokuma appears and announces they are all participants in a mutual killing game. To escape, a student must murder another and not be discovered during the Class Trial. If the killer is caught, they are executed; if they succeed, they go free while everyone else dies. The narrative starts just as the first trial is about to begin. Kleo, the Ultimate Artist, has been found stabbed in a bathroom, and Guest, who had initially partnered with Yuri the detective, must now work with the others to find the culprit.

The cast includes nine students, each with a unique talent: Jani, the Ultimate Makeup Artist; Jonh, the Ultimate Soccer Player; Kai, the Ultimate Singer; Miu, the Ultimate Gamer; Nami, the Ultimate Karateka; Erzy, the Ultimate Model; Ian, the Ultimate Influencer; Kleo, the Ultimate Artist; and Yuri, the Ultimate Detective. Yuri is intrigued by the killing game, while Jonh and Erzy are panicked and Jani tries to remain calm. The game is hosted by Monokuma, a sadistic black and white bear.
