Instead, the day goes by slowly with Steve ordering her to hit the showers during training, Tony warning her not to touch explosives in the lab, Peter running past to show Tony a suit upgrade, and Natasha handing her mission notes to sort, until the moment for someone to wish her a happy birthday never arrives. Late that evening, an emergency alert hits and Y/N throws herself into the mission to avoid thinking about the day, taking a small hit to the head that finally gets the team to pay attention to her, though for the wrong reason. Back at the Tower filling out post-mission reports for Fury, an exhausted Y/N writes "17" under her age, prompting Tony to ask if she's alright after the hit, Sam to joke that the head injury scrambled her numbers, and a few others to chuckle. When Y/N quietly clarifies that she turned seventeen "since this morning," a heavy silence falls over the table, and her attempt to say "It's okay" only makes it worse. Realization washes over the room as Steve's face falls, Tony takes the report to stare at the age, Peter looks devastated, Natasha closes her eyes in sympathy, and Bucky pieces together why she was so quiet all day.
