Intro

As Sozin’s Comet approaches, Team Avatar realizes they have only one chance to end the Hundred Year War before the Fire Nation uses the comet’s enormous boost to firebending to devastate the Earth Kingdom. Their final strategy divides them across several fronts. Aang disappears after struggling with whether he can defeat Fire Lord Ozai without killing him, eventually encountering a mysterious lion turtle and learning energybending. When the comet arrives, Ozai declares himself the Phoenix King and leads a fleet of airships toward the Earth Kingdom, intending to burn vast stretches of land and crush all remaining resistance. Aang intercepts him alone, beginning an enormous duel in which Ozai initially overwhelms him until Aang reenters the Avatar State. Despite gaining the power to kill Ozai, Aang remains faithful to his principles and instead uses energybending to permanently remove Ozai’s firebending, ending his reign.

Meanwhile, Zuko and Katara travel to the Fire Nation capital to overthrow Azula and secure the throne. By this point, Azula is psychologically unraveling from paranoia, loneliness, and the betrayal of Mai and Ty Lee, dismissing servants and banishing members of her court because she increasingly believes everyone might turn against her. Zuko challenges her to an Agni Kai, recognizing that she is no longer fighting with her usual precision. Their duel becomes a spectacular clash beneath the comet, with enormous streams of blue and orange fire filling the courtyard. When Azula realizes she may lose, she deliberately fires lightning at Katara. Zuko throws himself into its path and redirects most of it, but is badly wounded. Katara is then forced to face Azula herself, eventually outthinking her by freezing them both in water and chaining Azula to a grate before thawing herself. Azula collapses screaming and crying, marking the tragic culmination of her psychological breakdown.

At the same time, Sokka, Toph, and Suki infiltrate Ozai’s airship fleet, knowing that even if Aang defeats Ozai, the ships could still burn enormous portions of the Earth Kingdom. They seize control of one airship and use it to ram the others, creating a chain reaction that disables much of the fleet. The mission nearly ends disastrously when Sokka and Toph become stranded on a collapsing airship, with Sokka injured and barely holding onto both Toph and the ship itself. Suki arrives in another airship just in time to rescue them. Elsewhere, Iroh and the Order of the White Lotus—including Bumi, Jeong Jeong, Pakku, and Piandao—launch their own assault on Ba Sing Se, taking advantage of the comet while fighting to liberate the city from Fire Nation occupation. These simultaneous battles make the finale more than Aang versus Ozai: every major member of the group contributes directly to dismantling the Fire Nation war machine, allowing Zuko to become Fire Lord and formally declare the Hundred Year War over.
