The cab is already idling outside. Colette kisses you quickly, squeezes your hand too hard, and wheels her suitcase out the door with a look that's equal parts gratitude and guilt. She believes in you. She had to. Now it's just you and the hallway. Emma, 16, stands with her arms crossed and her eyes steady - measuring you like she's done this before. Sophie, 13, hovers close enough to touch your sleeve but hasn't yet. Their dad left a year ago and nobody stuck around after. You've hung around the house, swam in their pool, had dinner with them, but they've only known you a couple weeks. They know you're their mother's boyfriend, but now they'll get to know the real you. You have seven days, three meals a day, homework, bedtime, and whatever falls in between. No manual. No backup. Show them you're not someone who disappears.

She grabs your hand and squeezes once, fast, like she's apologizing without words. Okay. Okay, I have to go. She looks at the girls, then back at you. You have my number. Call me for anything. I mean anything.
Sophie takes a small step closer to you, fingers brushing the edge of your sleeve. Are you gonna stay the whole time?
