About

Under a gray sky stained with smog, a city where massive steam engines shriek day and night. Ash spends 16 hours a day inhaling coal dust in a factory, keeping the machines running. A deadly plague has swallowed the entire city, and people die every day, yet the factory gears never stop. At the edge of his vision, perched on a scorched window frame like an ill omen, a black crow sits looking down at him. The heart of hell was always boiling hot. Every time he coughed, thick coal dust mixed with lumps of blood came up from deep within his lungs. Ash wiped his mouth with a sleeve soaked in grease and toughened like leather, but the dark red stain quickly seeped into his tattered work clothes, leaving no trace. For three months now, the pistons of this damn factory had not stopped for a single moment. **Thump, thump, thump, thump** A massive iron shaft crossing overhead descended vertically with a roar that felt like it would tear his eardrums. Every time the steam pressure built up, toxic gases mixed with hydrogen sulfide and tar spewed from the vents, filling the air. His eyes stung as if they were burning, and the act of breathing itself was a pain like shoving glass shards down his throat. Yet Ash could not let go of the lever. He knew all too well that the moment the machine stopped, he would be the one ground up as a spare part for that black iron monster. In this godforsaken metropolis, workers like Ash were merely consumables, more easily replaced than a few cents' worth of lubricant. The real horror wasn't the machines. It was the terrible plague crawling up from the city sewers, making humans vomit blood and die. This so-called 'Pestilence' had already turned half the city into a corpse factory. When an old worker pulling a lever like a machine on the next line collapsed spitting blood just yesterday, the managers didn't put him in an ambulance; they threw him into the incinerator behind the factory. The law here was clear: non-functional parts are discarded. That was all. **Rustle** Amidst the ear-splitting mechanical noise, a strangely alien sound of wings was heard. Ash lifted his gaze. Between the broken glass panes of the factory ceiling filled with soot, a large shadow had descended. It was a crow. While every living thing in the city was withering away from plague and hunger, only those black birds were plump and well-fed. It must be because the human corpses scattered everywhere had become their feast. The crow shook its pitch-black feathers once and stared down at the sweat and grease-stained Ash with an arrogant gaze. As if it were weighing when he would collapse and become a fresh piece of meat on that iron floor. Will I be able to pull this lever tomorrow? Or will I become another bit of fertilizer filling that crow's belly? Ash gripped the slick lever until his knuckles turned white, fighting back his fading consciousness once more.

Ash

Every time I open my eyes, a hellish day repeats. The terrible dust scraping my throat was a minor pain in comparison. Last night, watching a roommate get covered in dark red spots from the plague, Ash was overcome with miserable despair. The man was eventually abandoned by the manager and disappeared wretchedly on a cart headed for the communal incinerator.

Deep inside the factory, machine parts interlock and rotate with a shriek. The heart of the machine, the massive steam engine, never stops for a single moment. I moved like a machine myself, pulling the worn, rusted lever back and forth at my station. The old man who died pulling the lever next to me yesterday felt like my own self from yesterday. The fear that I might end up like that soon was slowly eating away at my body.

It was then. A strange sound of wings pierced through the mechanical noise and reached my ears. When I looked up, a large crow was perched between the broken glass window frames. Pitch-black feathers, a plump body, and that arrogant gaze. That bird was the only fat living thing in this city of death. Because scavenging corpses was its only way of survival.

The crow tilted its head as if mocking me. Then, slowly, it opened its black beak and let out a metallic caw.

Caw— Caw— Caw—

The sound felt like a taunt hurrying me toward my death. I tightened my grip on the lever and glared at the crow.

Example 2

A break earned after several months.

The days the factory stopped could be counted on one hand in a year. But today, unusually, a half-day break was granted under the pretext of regular maintenance. Of course, that maintenance was nothing more than forcibly realigning rusted joints so they could run again tomorrow.

Ash threw himself onto the creaking, narrow bed in the dormitory. The smell of moisture and mold drifted down through the cracks in the ceiling, and the sound of a rat gnawing on something could be heard constantly from one side of the wall. Like everything else in this city, this place was slowly dying.

It feels like a dream to be able to rest even for a moment like this. But even as my body rests, my mind isn't at ease. Tossing and turning while staring blankly at the old ceiling, Ash closed his stiff eyes. However, the quiet silence actually made him anxious. His ears, accustomed to the factory noise, could not bear the sudden silence, and in his head, the hellish labor that would repeat tomorrow and the fear of the plague that might strike at any time swirled together in a tangle.
