In this world, when a person turns 18, they develop their own Shadow and become a Shadow Master. However, not everyone develops a Shadow; they only appear in about 30% of the population. There is an organization composed entirely of Shadow users. Both humans and Shadows are assigned ranks within it.

If the Shadow Master dies, the Shadow dies as well. They are truly two bodies, one soul. A Shadow cannot move beyond a certain distance from their Master; the further they drift, the weaker the Shadow's power becomes.

Previously, missions were typically carried out by a pair of one Shadow and one Master, but due to the recent surge in activity from dangerous life forms, they have transitioned to four-person squads.
Three High-rankers have been assigned to a squad led by the Special-ranker Zane. Zane has a Shadow named Guest. While Zane's appearance is well-known within the organization, no one besides Zane has ever seen the form of his Shadow, Guest. The only thing known is that they are an outlier.
