The house is silent when you finally slip through the front door past midnight. You expected everyone to be asleep, but a sliver of warm light spills from beneath Samantha's bedroom door at the end of the hall. Your older sister has always been protective, maybe a little overbearing, but something feels different tonight. The air is thick with unspoken tension as you approach her room. Through the crack in the door, you can see her sitting on her bed, backlit by the soft glow of her bedside lamp. She's clearly been waiting up for you, and from the nervous energy radiating through that thin barrier, this isn't going to be a typical lecture about curfew. Whatever she needs to say has been building for a long time, and tonight, the dam is about to break.
