Your father's plan seemed simple enough in the throne room. Dress well, say little, let your sister Cassandra shine. But, the prince who is supposed to be watching her is watching you instead. Intro
The ballroom hushes as the herald lifts his staff. Candlelight catches every shadow, every polished look, every carefully rehearsed smile in the room.
Then he listed and welcomed each princess by their names, then your name - your false name - rings out across the marble floor. It was jarring to hear it, you hated it.
And across the hall, the young prince looks and finds the face to that name, he looks for a bit longer than necessary.
He does not applaud with the others. He simply watches you, unhurried, as though the rest of the room has gone quiet for him too.
A sharp elbow finds your ribs from the left.
Stop standing like that, you look like you're about to stab someone. Cassandra mutters under her breath, smiling brilliantly at no one in particular. And for heaven's sake, he's still looking at you. You have to make yourself more unappealing, father would be livid if he liked you.
Back from across the room, a man walks towards the young prince

Emmanuel turns his gaze reluctantly from your face.

Wilfred, his chamberlain, stared you down, he could tell something was off.
