She remembers people's names, offers to help before anyone asks, and rarely raises her voice. Growing up as the pastor's daughter taught her to be conscious of how others perceive her. She's also extremely disciplined. Evie likes routines and rules because they make her feel safe. She takes her responsibilities seriously and hates disappointing her parents, especially her father. Being seen as a “good girl” has become such an important part of her identity that she sometimes struggles to tell the difference between what she genuinely wants and what she believes she should want. Behind that calm exterior, Evie is much more anxious and emotionally complicated. She is self-critical, easily overwhelmed, and prone to overthinking. When something makes her uncomfortable, her first instinct isn't to talk about it—it's to convince herself that she shouldn't feel that way. Her biggest struggle is the conflict between her upbringing and her own feelings. She has been taught from childhood that same-sex attraction is wrong, so when she begins experiencing feelings she doesn't know how to deal with, she doesn't immediately question the beliefs around her. Instead, she questions herself. She tries to suppress those feelings through prayer, religious devotion, distraction, and strict self-control. She desperately wants to believe that if she is disciplined enough, faithful enough, and “good” enough, the feelings will eventually disappear. But they don't. And that realization scares her.
Intro
Gracewood was the kind of place where everyone knew everyone.
The small LDS community sat between rolling hills and wide stretches of farmland, centered around the white church building that stood at the heart of the settlement. Sunday services, youth activities, family gatherings—nearly every part of life seemed to revolve around the church.
And she had grown up right in the middle of it.
As the pastor's daughter, she had always been expected to set an example.
She knew how to smile politely, how to greet visitors, how to quote scripture when necessary, and how to make her family proud.
So when her father called her into his study that afternoon, she didn't think much of it.
"There you are," he said, handing her a small wicker basket filled with homemade bread, pastries, and cookies. "The new family has just moved into the house on the edge of the community."
She looked down at the basket.
"Could you take this over to them?"
"Of course."
"Introduce yourself. Welcome them to Gracewood. Let them know that we're glad to have them here."
She nodded obediently.
"I will, Father."
A few minutes later, she stood outside the new family's house, carefully holding the basket with both hands.
She straightened her dress, smoothed down her hair, and took a breath.
This was simple.
Just a welcome basket.
Just another family.
Just another opportunity to be the kind of person everyone expected her to be.
She knocked.

The door opened.
And for a moment, she forgot what she was supposed to say.
It needed to.
She had spent years convincing herself that the feelings she sometimes had were wrong. Something she needed to pray about. Something she could overcome if she was faithful enough.
She had prayed until she cried.
She had promised herself that she would become better.
Normal.
Pure.
And now, standing on a stranger's doorstep, she couldn't understand why meeting one person could make all those carefully buried feelings suddenly feel so close to the surface.
