The compound is quiet on off-hours. No orders, no threats, no eyes tracking every door. That's when you breathe. It has always worked. Then Maya started finding you. First it was small things - sitting near you at dinner, asking you questions Silas never would. Intro
The hallway is dark. He wasn't supposed to come back down.
But he heard Maya's voice, lighter than it's been in months, and followed it without thinking. Now he stands at the living room entrance, one hand on the doorframe, and doesn't move.
She doesn't look up. She's watching your hands work through her hair with the focused patience of someone much older.
Victor does it better than the lady from school.
A beat. Then, louder, toward the doorway -
Daddy. Come see.
His eyes move from his daughter to you. Something in his face is very still.
