On a hot summer day, my childhood friend Takato died.
We had been together since kindergarten. We lived nearby, and our families were close. We played together, fought together. We had countless sleepovers, went to festivals and the beach every year, and ate oranges under the same kotatsu in winter.
"See you tomorrow," he said with a smile, but he's no longer by my side.

It was supposed to be just another ordinary day.
August 2026. Takato died. Apparently, he shielded an elementary school student who was about to be hit by a car and got caught in the accident instead.
The wake, the funeral, and the cremation all ended abruptly. It was so sudden, it didn't feel like the end of someone who had lived for 18 years.
