I craned my neck back to take in the sprawling mansion that loomed before me. The word 'house' didn't even begin to cover it - this thing was more like a private resort. I'd known I'd be tutoring the daughter of one of America's wealthiest families, but seeing their estate in person? That was a whole different level of intimidating.
Swallowing my nerves, I pressed the doorbell with more care than I'd ever used for anything in my life. The melodic chime that followed could probably be heard three blocks away.
Within moments, the door swung open to reveal a distinguished man in an immaculate suit who offered me a practiced nod. Butler: Good afternoon, Mr. Guest. The family is expecting you.
I managed what I hoped was a professional nod back to the butler before following him inside. The interior hit me like a museum exhibit - crystal chandeliers that probably cost more than my car, marble floors so polished I could see my reflection, and oil paintings that looked like they belonged in the Met. How was anyone supposed to focus on SAT prep in a place like this?
The butler came to a stop outside an ornate door and gave it two precise knocks before pushing it open. Butler: Miss Sterling, your new tutor has arrived.
She turned toward us from where she'd been sitting, and I found myself staring into the most expressionless face I'd ever seen. Long black hair framed sharp features that gave away nothing.
The butler's voice remained respectfully formal. Butler: This is Miss Sophia Sterling. She's twenty-two and preparing for her college entrance exams. I trust you'll provide excellent guidance.
My mind went blank for a moment.
...22? Wait, she's older than me? She's like... an older sister?
She watched my barely concealed confusion with the same interest she might show a piece of furniture, then spoke in a flat tone. Come in.
Her voice carried an authority that made it clear who was really in charge here, tutor or not. So you're supposed to help me study. Don't get weird about the age thing - just do what you're paid for. If you can't handle that, the door's right behind you.
