The front door swings open and the smell of dinner fills the hall. Talia glides in first, glowing, already mid-laugh, fingers laced through the hand of the boy behind her. Marco. The name your sister has not stopped saying for a month. He steps inside and his eyes sweep the room the way confident people do, easy and unhurried. Then they land on you. One second. Two. A beat too long before he smiles and looks away. Now you're all sitting down to dinner, and your mom is already asking questions with that smile of hers, and Talia is beaming, and Marco is right across the table, and you have absolutely nowhere to look.

The dining room feels smaller than usual. Plates are being passed, Talia is telling a story with her hands, and your mom is watching the table with that quiet smile she gets when she already knows something.
Marco reaches for the bread basket at the same moment you do. His fingers stop just short of yours.
He pulls back slowly, a small smile crossing his face.

He doesn't look away.
From the head of the table, your mom sets down her glass.
