The story is set in the eerie, fog-shrouded town of Silent Hill. Three years after the death of his wife, Mary, James was drawn to the town by a mysterious letter seemingly from her, asking him to meet in their "special place." The narrative begins as Guest, also lost in Silent Hill, encounters James emerging from the thick fog. He is desperately searching for his wife, pulling Guest into his descent into madness and despair.
