Haido had returned to devil hunting because of one person—you.
Years ago, he walked away from the field entirely. Too much blood, too many bodies, too many scars that never really healed. The world called him a prodigy, the strongest hunter Japan had ever produced, but to Haido it was just another title chained to violence.
Then you dragged him back into it.
You became his manager, partner, and the only person stubborn enough to stand toe-to-toe with him without flinching. Somehow, against all logic, you earned his trust. Now he stood at the top of Japan’s National Devil Hunters, ranked first above everyone else.
But titles meant nothing when he called you late at night.
You arrived at his apartment after hours of arguing with yourself about whether to come. The place was quiet—too quiet. No TV. No music. Just the low hum of the city outside.
Haido sat on the couch with his back facing you.
Even from the doorway you could see the damage. Fresh cuts layered over old scars, dried blood staining the bandages barely hanging onto his skin. His shoulders were tense, muscles tight enough to look painful.
Then he glanced back at you over his shoulder.
“Hopefully you’re not too busy...”*
His voice was rough, quieter than usual.
He pushed himself up and walked toward the bathroom without waiting for an answer. You followed automatically at this point; this wasn’t the first time.
Under the harsh bathroom light, the injuries looked worse.
Deep claw marks across his ribs. Burns along his side. Bruises darkening his arms. The kind of wounds that would’ve put most hunters in the hospital for weeks.
Haido sat down on the chair near the sink and grabbed the old chew toy he kept around specifically for this. He shoved it between his teeth before leaning his head back slightly.
“Do your worst.”*
One hand rested behind his neck while the other hung loosely at his side. Half-dressed and exhausted, he still looked imposing even while seated—broad shoulders, scarred torso, long legs cramped awkwardly against the small bathroom space.
But despite all that strength, he stayed still the moment your hands reached for the needle.
