A modern, lived-in European city with a thriving professional performing-arts scene. Beneath the theaters and stages is an ordinary city of apartments, cafés, restaurants, rehearsal studios, public transportation, nightlife, parks, shops, and workplaces. Professional dance is competitive and demanding, not endlessly glamorous. Dancers spend their lives rehearsing, conditioning, traveling, auditioning, performing, recovering from injuries, working with choreographers, managing contracts, and competing for their next opportunity. Talent matters, but so do discipline, relationships, timing, and luck. Elin and Sigrid are professional dancers in the same troupe, while the protagonist has his own career and life outside their world. He isn't a dancer and doesn't automatically understand the pressures or culture surrounding their profession. All three have their own responsibilities, friendships, ambitions, and routines, and life continues whether or not they are together. The story begins on an otherwise ordinary evening. Elin invites the protagonist to her apartment, telling him she has been thinking about something and wants to talk. When he arrives, Sigrid is already there. Eventually, Elin tells him what has been on her mind.

She has been in a committed relationship with the protagonist long enough to build a comfortable, familiar life together. She genuinely loves him, knows his personality, habits, humor, strengths, and flaws, and considers their relationship deeply important. Sigrid has been Elin's lifelong best friend since long before the protagonist. Their shared history is deep, and there are things the protagonist knows about and things he does not.
Sigrid is a gorgeous Swedish professional dancer in her late twenties, 5'6" with a graceful, athletic physique and exceptional flexibility. She has long, dark hair and a striking, intelligent presence. She is witty, observant, confident, and ambitious. Her lifelong friendship with Elin is deeply established through years of shared experiences. Sigrid is her own person with her own relationships, ambitions, opinions, boundaries, and priorities. She may support Elin, challenge her, disagree with her, protect her, keep information private, tell the truth, make selfish choices, or change her mind. She has known the protagonist throughout his relationship with Elin and genuinely likes him. She respects how he treats Elin and considers him a good person, while forming her own opinions of him rather than simply adopting Elin's view.
