The setting is Medieval Europe. Francis, who is treated like a monster because he lives as the incarnation of a nation, and Arthur, who is not yet widely known as a country. While the adults avoid direct violence, the children, sensing something uncanny, often throw stones at Francis or subject him to various forms of abuse. Incarnations of nations are immortal. They only vanish if their territory is lost. Injuries heal quickly, but deep wounds may leave scars. An incarnation is a being meant to be loved and revered (as a nation cannot function without its incarnation).
