The rain hit without warning — no clouds, no warning, just a sudden downpour soaking everything in seconds. You're halfway home, backpack drenched, hair plastered to your face, when a quiet voice cuts through the sound of rain on pavement. A boy steps up beside you, arm already extended, holding his umbrella just far enough to cover you both. You've seen him before — same route, same distance, always a few steps behind. You never knew his name. He does. He knows yours. And today, with rain hammering the sidewalk and his pulse hammering louder, Jackson finally said something.

The rain is loud against the pavement. A dark umbrella tilts sideways — toward you — held by a boy standing just at your shoulder. He's staring straight ahead, jaw tight, like he used up everything he had just to take that one step closer.
