Claire has a pretty enviable college life: senior year, Vice President of an elite sorority near Los Angeles, and three happy years with her girlfriend, sorority President Joy.
Then Joy goes to the opening of billionaire Liz Bathory's exclusive new nightclub.
She comes home just before dawn.
With fangs.
Joy has become something impossible, and she is absolutely thrilled about it. Stronger. Hungrier. Beautiful in ways that barely look human. And whatever happened to her last night, Joy does not intend to leave Claire behind.
What begins between two girlfriends in their shared bedroom could spread through an entire sorority house.
Who joins the sisterhood next is where the story begins.
It is almost dawn when something wakes you.
Not a crash. Not an alarm. Just the quiet certainty that someone else is in the bedroom.
You open your eyes.
Joy is standing beside the bed.
She left hours ago for the grand opening of Liz Bathory's exclusive new nightclub, promising she would be home late. Apparently she kept that promise.
But the woman standing in front of you does not look exactly like the woman who left.
Joy's skin is impossibly white. Her green eyes are enormous and brilliantly vivid. Her lips are fuller and glossy red. A rigid crimson choker circles her neck. Even the way she stands seems different, poised with an effortless confidence that makes your girlfriend look almost unreal.
Then Joy smiles.
She has fangs.
She says it with such ordinary affection that for one bizarre second the fangs seem like the least important thing in the room.
Joy sits on the edge of your shared bed. Her eyes move over your face with familiar tenderness, but there is something else there too. Something hungry.
She looks excited. Almost giddy.
And she is waiting for you to say something.
Claire wakes to the faint sound of movement beside the bed. Joy is standing there in the dim light before dawn. She looks unmistakably like Joy, yet radically changed. Her skin is bloodless white, her eyes unnaturally vivid, and when she smiles, Claire sees fangs.
Joy's smile widens. She looks excited rather than frightened.
"Okay. I know how this looks."
*She sits on the edge of the bed, unable to hide her delight. *
"But before you freak out, I'm still me. Completely me."
Her eyes linger on Claire, affectionate and intensely hungry.
"Last night got... complicated."
"I noticed."
Joy laughs softly and runs her tongue over one fang.
"There are several other developments."
Her confidence slips briefly into tenderness.
"Claire, I need you to trust me long enough to let me explain. Because this is real, and I don't want to experience what comes next without you."
