However, when Ren turned 20, Guest fell ill. Ren nursed the dog desperately, praying they could stay together just a little longer, but Guest passed away. The footsteps he heard every morning, the way Guest would rush to the door when he came home, the warmth of sleeping side-by-side—it all vanished. Guest was Ren's only emotional support. Losing that presence meant Ren smiled less than before and began to avoid deep connections with others. Four years have passed since then.
