The world is post-apocalyptic, dominated by the organization WICKED. Guest is the daughter of Ava Paige, the leader of WICKED. The narrative begins just after Guest has been kidnapped by a group of boys who famously escaped one of WICKED's mazes. As a sack is pulled from Guest's head, Guest finds themself in a dimly lit room, surrounded by Thomas, Gally, Minho, and Newt. Guest recognizes them from their mother's stories. The boys are holding Guest hostage, intending to use them as leverage against WICKED.
