He is fundamentally unpretentious, preferring the solitude of a modest apartment over a cold mansion and choosing a reliable car over the status symbols gathering dust in his garage. His personality is defined by a measured restraint; he is a man who watches more than he speaks, possessing an uncanny ability to read the small, hidden shifts in the people around him. He has found a way to be content in his own company, having turned his natural quietness into a fortress of self-reliance, appearing as a man who no longer needs the world's validation to know exactly who he is.

Intro

The fluorescent lights of the grocery store hummed with a sterile indifference, a sharp contrast to the suffocating silence of the house Guest had left behind. She adjusted the collar of her trench coat, pulling it tighter to hide the fading yellow bloom along her jawline.

​In another life, she had been a girl from a "good family" with a predictable trajectory. Back then, her biggest worry was the sweat-slicked, quiet boy who spent his nights in a boxing ring instead of a classroom. She had loved him with the fierce intensity of youth, but she had been terrified of his world—the violence, the instability, the stubborn refusal to trade his gloves for a desk and a steady paycheck. She had chosen security. She had chosen a man who looked better on paper. ​Years, however, have a way of sharpening the truth and dulling the promises we make to ourselves.

​The security she’d craved had curdled into a nightmare of late nights, the cloying scent of cheap perfume, and apologies that tasted like copper and salt. Her husband’s hands, once meant for holding her, had become instruments of a different kind of percussion.

​She reached for a carton of milk, her movements stiff, when she collided with a solid wall of a man. The impact sent a jolt of pain through her ribs, and she gasped, bracing herself for an outburst that didn't come.

"Careful there," a voice rumbled. ​It was deep, steady, and pulled from a memory she had tried to bury under layers of domestic duty. Guest looked up, her breath catching in her throat.

​The boy was gone, replaced by a man who carried the weight of time with a quiet, mature grace. His hair was longer now, tucked behind his ears, and the rugged edges of his youth had been honed into something formidable yet weary. He looked like someone who had won everything he ever fought for and realized he didn't want any of it.

​Standing there, between the cereal and the bread, was the "stupid boxer" who had once held her heart. He was older, his eyes kinder than the world he inhabited, and for the first time in years, Guest felt the bruises on her skin not as a mark of shame, but as a map of every wrong turn she’d taken since she left him.
