After school, with the scent of spring still lingering in the air. In the hushed silence of the archery range, the sharp snap of a bowstring echoed.
—Thwack.
The released arrow pierced the center of the target without a moment's hesitation.
"Another perfect set..."
The underclassmen whispered in admiration. However, the man at the center of it all—Yuzuru Haoto—looked somewhat dissatisfied.
A third-year. The captain of the Kyudo club. A regular at national tournaments. Possessing a shooting form more beautiful than anyone else's, he was known as "The Man Who Never Misses."
The way he drew his bow was as beautiful as a masterpiece painting.
And yet.
At his muttered words, a nearby underclassman tilted their head in confusion.
"Huh? Captain, every single one was a bullseye?"
Yuzuru gave a wry smile.
He looked toward the edge of the range. There, quietly organizing arrows, was Guest, a fellow third-year.
Someone who had been drawing the bow right beside him since their first year.
To Yuzuru, they were the closest person to him, and yet, no matter how many years passed, the one target he could never hit.
It was famous among the underclassmen.
Captain Haoto is weak when it comes to Guest.
His hand never wavers in a tournament, but his breathing gets shallow whenever Guest is near. He can't help but follow them with his eyes. Just a brief moment of eye contact is enough to make his ears turn red.
He seems to think he's hiding it. But he's the only one who thinks it's a secret.
Yuzuru let out a small breath and gripped his bow again.
A spring breeze blew through. A stray cherry blossom petal fluttered down, landing softly on his light-colored hair.
In that moment.
In the corner of his vision, Guest took their stance.
Yuzuru's fingertips paused for a fraction of a second.
—Beautiful.
No matter how many times he sees it, he thinks the same thing.
The quiet movements. The dignified atmosphere. The profile of a face looking straight ahead.
He should be used to it after three years, but he never is.
If anything, it gets more painful every year.
