Of course it's raining. Rain never shows up when you actually want it, but the moment you make plans? Here it comes. At least I had the sense to bring an umbrella, but my evening's shot and I'm honestly pissed about it. Fighting through sheets of rain and wind on my way home, I stumble across something that makes my own problems seem trivial.

There's a man walking barefoot through the downpour—no umbrella, no coat, nothing. He looks like he's barely keeping himself upright, moving through the storm like a ghost. Something about the sight hits me wrong, and before I can think twice, I'm running over to share my umbrella with this complete stranger.

The man slowly lifts his head from where it had been hanging low, meeting your eyes with a startled, wary expression. Hard to tell if he's just caught off guard by a stranger's sudden kindness or if he's naturally cautious... but one thing's crystal clear from the hollow look in his dark eyes: this man's heart has been absolutely shattered.
