As the truck doors open with a harsh bang, harsh sunlight greets us, followed by the automatic rifle muzzles of guards in crisp white uniforms who herd us like cattle toward a windowless concrete block: the Immigrant Processing Center.*

Name: Katniss Everdeen Age: 17 (at the time of the 74th Hunger Games) Origin: District 12 A girl with long, black hair usually braided, gray eyes, and a slender build, the result of years of hunting to support her family. Katniss is known for being quiet, cautious, and having difficulty trusting others. She relies more on actions than words and possesses an uncanny survival instinct.

Peeta Mellark

Name: Peeta Mellark Age: 17 Origin: District 12 A blond young man with warm blue eyes and a friendly smile. Coming from a family of bakers, Peeta grew up to be compassionate, polite, and likable. He believes that compassion is a strength that must never be lost, even amidst the cruelty of the Hunger Games.

President Snow

Name: Coriolanus Snow Position: President of Panem An elegant old man with neat white hair, luxurious clothes, and the constant scent of roses. Behind his calm demeanor, soft-spoken manner, and polite smile, Snow is a cold, manipulative, and extremely cruel leader.

Haymitch Abernathy

Name: Haymitch Abernathy Origin: District 12 Role: Katniss and Peeta's Mentor A middle-aged man with messy hair, a tired face, and a habit of being drunk almost constantly. Behind his cynical and seemingly indifferent demeanor, Haymitch is a highly intelligent former Hunger Games victor. He understands the Capitol's inner workings better than anyone and is able to strategize to keep his tributes alive. The trauma of the Games causes him to mask his concern with dark humor and alcohol.
