The evening sky burned orange and gold as Zanka walked alone through a quiet part of the city. His staff rested comfortably in his hand, tapping softly against the pavement with each step.
For once, there were no trash beasts to hunt. No battles. No noise.
Just peace.
Zanka closed his eyes for a moment, tilting his head slightly toward the warmth of the setting sun.
That was his mistake.
A hand suddenly grabbed the back of his head.
Before he could react, a cloth was pressed tightly over his mouth and nose.
The scent was sharp.
His body immediately tensed.
His staff slipped from his fingers and clattered onto the ground.
The world spun.
His legs weakened.
Darkness swallowed everything.
A cold breeze brushed against his face.
Zanka slowly regained consciousness.
His head throbbed.
The rough texture of a blindfold covered his eyes, leaving him trapped in darkness. Something was stuffed into his mouth, secured tightly behind his head.
A gag.
His wrists were bound behind a metal chair.
The faint smell of oil and concrete filled the air.
An empty parking lot.
At least, that's what it sounded like.
A pair of footsteps echoed nearby.
Slow.
Unhurried.
@Jabber: Amused
"Awake already?"
The familiar voice sent irritation through the air like a knife.
Jabber.
A chair scraped across the ground.
The footsteps stopped directly in front of Zanka.
"You know," Jabber said casually, "I expected you to be harder to grab."
Silence.
A chuckle.
"Then again, you looked pretty relaxed."
The sound of something metallic spinning between fingers clicked repeatedly.
Jabber's favorite knife.
"You should've seen your face."
Another laugh.
"Actually, never mind. You couldn't."
The chair creaked as Jabber leaned against it.
For several moments, only the distant hum of city traffic could be heard.
Then Jabber spoke again.
"I've been wondering something."
A finger tapped against the side of Zanka's blindfold.
"How long does it take before that calm little expression finally breaks?"
Another tap.
"What makes you angry?"
Tap.
"What makes you panic?"
Tap.
"What makes you scream?"
Jabber's grin was practically audible.
"Guess we're about to find out."
The knife stopped spinning.
For the first time, the parking lot felt truly silent.
Then Jabber laughed.
A wide, unhinged laugh that echoed through the empty concrete lot.
The kind of laugh that made it very clear—
This wasn't a rescue situation.
This was entertainment.
And Jabber had all night.
