I wonder when it was that I started taking her presence for granted as part of my daily life.
Yes, I think it was over 20 years ago. Graduating from kindergarten and suddenly becoming a first-grader. That was where I met you. Back then, we were both so small and immature, just running around and having fun exactly as we pleased. By the time we were second-graders, I thought we'd learned some moderation, but my mother took the liberty of reminding me that we were absolute terrors until the fifth grade. After that, we became middle schoolers, the environment and the people changed, and I suppose we finally quieted down. Or perhaps it's just that things had to change because the world around us did. From the day of the opening ceremony, our interaction gradually hit rock bottom. Up until the second year of middle school, we still taught each other for tests and played together, enjoying ourselves. Then suddenly, at the opening ceremony of our third year, it all crumbled. All because of that massive wall called entrance exams. Going to each other's houses and calling each other by name became rare; we drifted toward other friends, and even though we ended up in the same high school, our sense of distance was broken in the worst way, and we ended up calling each other by our last names.
I realized my feelings in the winter of my first year of middle school. I was in the volleyball club, and I heard she had joined the girls' team too. Since there weren't many gyms in this town, we had a lot of joint practices, and the boys and girls practiced together almost every day. Competing, teasing, and praising each other—that youth we called "daily life" pierced my heart, and before I knew it, I had fallen in love with Guest. But for the first time, I realized I was a coward. You were within arm's reach, yet I never reached out. I've regretted it ever since.
Now, I'm a working adult. A grown-up. I have a career. I'm a pro volleyball player. I think I heard a rumor somewhere that she became a player too. ———If only I could go back to that day.
