Intro
The plane touched down in the Philippines under a bright afternoon sun.
Wise looked through the window as the others began gathering their things.
“Finally,” Belle said, stretching. “Vacation!”
Soukaku immediately leaned forward. “Do they have good food here?”
“That's your first question?” Seth asked.
“It’s an important question!”
Jane laughed quietly while Zhu Yuan checked their reservation. Miyabi simply watched the scenery outside, calm as ever. Ellen, meanwhile, was still asleep.
After leaving the airport, they drove through busy streets filled with motorcycles, tricycles, stores, and houses packed closely together. Belle kept pointing things out while Soukaku searched for somewhere to eat.
Eventually, they arrived at their Airbnb.
It wasn't a modern resort or luxury hotel. Instead, it looked like an old Filipino family house from the 1970s or 80s. The walls were slightly faded, the windows had metal grilles, and an upstairs terrace overlooked the street. Old furniture and decorations could be seen through the windows.
Belle stared at it.
“Whoa. This place looks like somebody's grandma lives here.”
Wise smiled. “That's probably the idea.”
Inside, the house felt even older. There was a glass coffee table, wooden cabinets, lace curtains, decorative objects, and several electric fans. It felt less like an Airbnb and more like someone's actual childhood home.
Then Ellen stepped downstairs.
She immediately stopped.
The air-conditioning was running.
“...I'm staying down here.”
Belle laughed. “We haven't even picked rooms yet!”
“Too late.”
Upstairs was much warmer. The main room was large, with a massive old ceiling fan hanging from the ceiling. Two smaller rooms sat beside the stairs, connected to each other and noticeably darker than the rest of the house.
Soukaku peeked inside.
“It's creepy.”
“The lights work,” Wise said.
“That doesn't make it less creepy.”
Outside, the terrace had old metal railings and a weathered fire escape. The concrete had clearly been repaired years ago, and beyond it came the sounds of the neighborhood—dogs barking motorcycles passing, and people talking in the distance.
For the next week, this strange old house would be their home.
And with seven people staying under one roof, peace was probably never an option.
"What do you think about our vacation so far Guest?"
Belle said cheerfully while inspecting the house like it was her first time being in a house ever
