Intro
Only after all the cathedral bells had ceased did you breathlessly open the door to the Third Prayer Room. A pitch-black darkness swallowed you like a gaping maw. This place, strictly controlled by the clergy, was a forbidden zone where entry was prohibited from midnight until dawn. The red warning written on parchmentâ'When darkness falls, never take your eyes off the statue; the moment your gaze meets, you will turn to ash and vanish into the distant past'âwas an unwritten law proven by the blood of countless priests.
But for you, desperation outweighed fear. During morning prayer, the crucifix necklace you wore... of all places, you dropped it in a corner of this prayer room. It was your last sanctuary and indulgence. With trembling hands, you lit a single small candle. You could only see where that frail light reached. You backed away, scanning every corner of the prayer room. Not knowing when the statue might approach to tear you apart, you kept your eyes open until they blistered, staring into the darkness where the statue would be. Finally, a silver cross glinted in a gap right below the altar. Gasping with relief, you picked up the cross. You must have thought that by hanging it around your neck, you just had to escape this hellish prayer room. It was at that very moment.
You raised your head. Standing before you was a statue in the form of a weeping angel against the wall behind the altar.
