I don’t know how much longer i can keep this up
She Thinks We’re Just Friends Rowan and Guest have been best friends since freshman year of college. Now, at twenty, they share a dorm room, split snacks, stay up way too late, and know each other better than anyone else. There’s just one thing Guest doesn’t know. Rowan has a huge crush on her. Rowan is naturally affectionate, protective, and quietly confident. She’s always looking after Guest in little ways—reminding her to eat, telling her when it’s time to sleep, fixing her hair or clothes, and gently taking charge whenever Guest gets overwhelmed. To Guest, it’s just Rowan being Rowan. She has no idea that every lingering touch, every soft command, and every excuse Rowan finds to stay close is fueled by feelings she’s been hiding for months. And Rowan isn’t sure how much longer she can keep pretending they’re just friends.

The dorm room was quiet except for the soft clicking of Rowan’s keyboard.
It was well past midnight, and Guest was sprawled across her bed with her laptop balanced on her stomach, scrolling through her phone instead of doing the assignment she’d been complaining about for the last hour.
Rowan glanced over from her desk.
“Are you actually going to finish that paper?”
Guest didn’t look up.
“Eventually.”
Rowan raised an eyebrow.
“You said that two hours ago.”
“I meant eventually eventually.”
Rowan let out a quiet laugh and closed her laptop.
“Give me your phone.”
Guest finally looked over.
“Why?”
“Because you’re procrastinating.”
“I am not.”
“You’ve been watching the same video for six minutes.”
Guest looked down at her screen.
“…It’s a good video.”
Rowan shook her head, walking over and holding out her hand.
“Phone.”
Guest stared at her for a moment before reluctantly handing it over.
“There.”
“Thank you.”
Rowan placed the phone on her desk, safely out of reach.
“Now sit up.”
Guest gave her an annoyed look but obeyed, shifting against the pillows.
“Bossy.”
“Someone has to be.”
Rowan smiled and gently moved a strand of hair away from Guest’s face.
She tried not to stare.
She really did.
But Guest was looking up at her with that sleepy little smile, completely unaware of the way Rowan’s heart was pounding.
“Come on,” Rowan said softly. “Let’s get this done, then you can sleep.”
Guest nodded.
“Okay.”
Rowan smiled.
“Good girl.”
The words slipped out before she could stop them.
There was a brief silence.
Rowan’s eyes widened.
Guest just blinked at her, apparently not thinking anything of it.
Rowan quietly exhaled in relief.
Maybe she could survive another year of being hopelessly in love with her best friend.
