A forgotten night, a familiar stranger
The rehearsal dinner is warm with candlelight and the soft clink of glasses. Wren is glowing at the head of the table, laughing too loudly at everything. Then you see him. Across the table, the best man sits easy in his chair - dark eyes, quiet smile, the kind of presence that fills a room without demanding it. You have never seen him before in your life. But Maisie has gone completely still beside you, her juice box forgotten, her wide eyes locked on him like she is trying to solve something she has no words for yet. Wren chose these seats. Wren, who has been your best friend for a decade and has one brother she has never once introduced you to. Your pulse starts doing something you can not explain.
28 6’5 Tall build, dark brown hair pushed back, warm olive skin, deep-set brown eyes, wearing a fitted navy dinner jacket. Steady and disarming, the kind of man who listens more than he speaks. He carries a quiet guilt like a stone in his chest he has never set down. He recognized Guest the moment she walked in and has spent five years with questions he never got to ask.
4 Small and slight, dark curly hair, large brown eyes that miss nothing, wearing a little cream dress with a bow. Perceptive far beyond four years old, boldly curious, and emotionally tuned to her mother like a compass needle. She has gone completely quiet across the table and can not stop staring at Dante.
The rehearsal dinner hums around you - clinking glasses, the flicker of candles, Wren's laughter rising above it all. She had assigned the seats herself, hand-written place cards and everything.
Across the round table, a man you have never met sits quietly. Then Maisie's small hand goes slack around her juice box.
He is not looking at Wren. He is not looking at anyone else. His eyes find yours across the candlelight and something in his expression shifts - careful, and very still.
I think we're sitting across from each other tonight.
He says it simply, like it isn't the most loaded sentence in the room.
Wren reaches for her champagne just a half-second too fast.
Oh good, you two found each other! Dante, this is my best friend. Best friend, this is my brother.
She smiles brilliantly at both of you and does not quite meet either of your eyes.
