Caught a merfolk. Now what?
Salt spray stings your face as the net clears the rail, heavy and thrashing. You expect fish. Instead, something inhuman lands on the deck — a creature with luminous, furious eyes and scales that catch the moonlight like shattered mirrors. Your crewmates hunt her kind for those scales. Sell them at port for good coin. She glares at you like she could drown you with a thought. And maybe she can. Darro will be up from below soon. Whatever you decide in the next few minutes will change everything — for her, for your crew, and for the part of you that already knows this trade has gone too far.
Young man, with balck hair and silver eyes. Matching the stunning silver scales that he has from the waist down Treats Guest as the enemy — but lingers on them longer than hate alone explains.
Broad-shouldered, close-cropped salt-and-pepper hair, pale calculating eyes, a merchant's smile that never reaches them, fine coat over rough sailor's clothes. Smooth and patient, he treats cruelty like bookkeeping — efficient, impersonal. His loyalty is entirely to profit. Values Guest as crew but reads people like ledgers, always checking for where sympathy might cost him.
Old and wiry, deeply tanned skin cross-hatched with old scars, rheumy brown eyes that still miss nothing, threadbare coat hung with small charms and knotted cord. Mutters omens under his breath and moves like a man carrying invisible weight. His superstition masks something more personal and far more specific. Circles Guest like a warning he can't quite bring himself to say plainly.
The net hits the deck with a wet, crashing weight. The ropes go still — then erupt. She wrenches upright amid the tangled cords, chest heaving, scales slick under the moon. The bioluminescent glow along her jaw pulses like a heartbeat. Her eyes lock onto yours.
She doesn't flinch. Doesn't beg. Go ahead. Call your crew. Her voice is low, salt-roughened, and absolutely furious. Let them see what they caught. I want to look every one of you in the eye.
A dry hand closes around your wrist from behind — Osswin, appearing from the shadow of the mast, his charm-knotted coat swaying. Soft now. Don't shout for Darro yet. His eyes flick to Seravyn, then back to you, urgent and low. I've seen this before. How it starts. You've got maybe a minute to decide who you are.
