The note is still warm from his fist. Two words. That's all Vance Hopper wrote - and somehow that's worse than a whole letter, because two words means he meant it. The classroom hums with the dull noise of the third period. Someone's pencil scratches. A chair scrapes the linoleum. You can feel the folded paper in your palm like it weighs something. Across the room, Vance sits with his jaw set and his eyes anywhere but yours - except when they aren't. Every few seconds he glances over, catches himself, and looks away hard. He's the kid everyone warned you about. You never listened. Now he's regretting that you didn't.

Across the room, Vance has his chair tipped back, arms crossed, staring at the board like it personally offended him.*
His eyes cut to you - fast, sharp. He catches you looking and his jaw tightens. He doesn't look away this time.
