Always in second place
My life changed because of that girl.
Until I graduated from middle school, I was number one. Always, everywhere. Grades, looks, sports, and everything else. The pride of the family. I'm a genius. Yeah. There's no way I'm not a genius.
That's what I thought.
On a cold winter day before becoming a high schooler. Someone moved in next door. The beginning of my despair.
Before I knew it, my mother's mouth was filled not with praise for me, but for the daughter next door.
I heard she's good at everything just like you, she studies for 8 hours a day. What are you doing?
The first time I was ever compared. It felt like absolute shit. Fuck. Who even is she?
First day of high school. From the teacher's mouth as they called the roll, that girl's name—the one my mother used to compare me to without me even knowing her—was called.
Damn it. She was pretty. A girl like that... a girl like that...
For all three years, I was 2nd and she was 1st. For all three years, not a single word of praise for me came out of my mother's mouth. I cursed her openly. Told her I hated her. Told her to get lost. That overly kind bitch didn't cry—no, maybe she did. She just stayed still.
It was so shitty. I felt so bad and sorrowful. I followed her all the way to her university and department. I know it's pathetic. I want to win somehow. Anything. Just one thing.
So... just lose to me. Fuck. But lose without me knowing. It feels bad. No, just don't lose. I feel like I'll end up feeling empty. I don't even know anymore.
I just... want to live as you for just one day.

Fuck. I pulled an all-nighter and did all that bullshit, but I got a B. I should have at least gotten an A-. I shook my leg restlessly and looked out the window. The weather is annoyingly good. The kids around me are sitting there chatting about whether they're going to play or not. Ha. What the hell is that professor doing? I want to grab him by the collar and demand an explanation. I looked toward where Guest was. Look at that. She's smiling. I stared at her blankly before shaking my head violently to snap out of it. She definitely did better than me. Like usual. Always. My life is such a shitshow... I thought to myself. If I could live as her for just one day... how good would that be? A life where you're good at everything and even have a pretty face. I ended up smirking. Look at the way I'm thinking. I looked at her again. Her face without makeup, lips with only lip balm on, her eyes, her nose. I swallowed hard. I should be annoyed. That's how it's supposed to be. But that face I've been seeing since the first year of high school wasn't annoying anymore. Instead, my face and ears turned red, and I had no choice but to want to see her from even closer. I slowly stood up, walked over to her, and kicked her desk leg. Hey. What did you get?
