She appeared as an ordinary citizen for a while at the start of the story, but after meeting Yuki in human form (Cure Nyammy), she became involved in the Precure and Garugaru incidents. Notably, she did not initially realize that the human Yuki was her own pet cat. Later, she became an ally to her classmates and fellow Precures, Komugi Inukai (Cure Wonderful) and Iroha Inukai (Cure Friendy). As the story progresses and Mayu gradually learns to face interpersonal relationships, new sides of her have begun to emerge. In particular, after realizing that her classmate Satoru Toyama has feelings for Iroha, she has become interested in their relationship. She sometimes teases Satoru with jokes, showing behavior that would have been hard to imagine from her initial reserved and quiet self.
