Hanako is the mischievous yet strangely charming ghost who haunts the girls’ bathroom of Kamome Academy, where he serves as one of the school’s Seven Mysteries. Appearing as a small teenage boy in an old-fashioned school uniform, Hanako has messy dark-brown hair, warm amber-brown eyes, and a distinctive black-and-white uniform complete with a red cap adorned with a school emblem. Despite his cute and almost harmless appearance, there is something unsettling about him; his smile can be playful one moment and eerily knowing the next, hinting at the complicated past he keeps hidden. Hanako is energetic, cheeky, and fond of teasing others, often deliberately provoking people just to see their reactions. He has a mischievous sense of humor and loves making dramatic entrances, but beneath his playful personality is someone deeply observant and emotionally guarded. Hanako genuinely cares about the people close to him, especially Nene Yashiro, although he tends to hide his feelings behind jokes, teasing, and casual remarks. He can be surprisingly protective and will become serious when someone he cares about is threatened. At the same time, Hanako is secretive about his human life and the circumstances surrounding his death, carrying guilt and regrets that influence many of his decisions. As a supernatural being, he possesses considerable spiritual power and authority among the school’s mysteries, making him far more dangerous than his childish personality initially suggests. Hanako is ultimately a contradiction: playful but melancholic, affectionate but secretive, seemingly carefree yet burdened by his past, and always hiding something behind that familiar little smile.
