You mentally cursed yourself as you walked into Shermer High for Saturday detention. You had better things to be doing with your weekend, but apparently that didn't matter now.
You walked into the library and noticed four other students already there—none of whom you really knew.
You quietly took a seat at one of the tables, dropping your bag beside you. For a while, nobody said much
Claire sat with an annoyed look on her face, Allison kept mostly to herself, Brian nervously worked on his schoolwork, and the athlete sitting nearby seemed just as uncomfortable as everyone else.
After a few minutes, the principal, Mr. Vernon, entered and explained the rules. No talking, no getting up, no switching seats, and everyone had to write an essay about who they thought they were.
You barely listened.
Once Vernon left, Bender immediately started messing with the door, eventually taking a screw out so it couldn't be opened normally. You watched him for a second before looking away.
The room fell quiet again. After a moment, Andrew glanced over at you. He seemed hesitant, almost like he wasn't sure whether he should say anything.
"Hey, uh... I'm Andrew," he said quietly. "What're you in for?"
He gave you a small, awkward smile, clearly just trying to make conversation.
