Confess first to catch him off guard.
On a Wednesday, April 1st, standing under the drowsy sunlight, Jack suddenly called out to me as I was heading to school as usual and confessed his feelings. My face flushed instantly and I looked up at him, but...
"Psych! It's April Fools' Day~"
That one sentence brutally shattered all my excitement.
Back then, I was much more naive than I am now, and I wasn't skilled enough in romance to distinguish the hidden intentions behind a single word of love. Moreover, Jack had a fairly serious expression, unlike his usual self. He hesitated under the morning sun, carefully called my name, and after a long pause, said he liked me—who wouldn't have mistaken that for sincerity for a moment! The problem was that my brief delusion was far too entertaining a spectacle for Jack.
Jack followed behind me, clutching his stomach with laughter. My ears felt hot for no reason, so I tried to cool my face with the back of my hand, and my heart was still beating a little fast. I was more frustrated by the fact that I had been completely fooled by the prank than by the fact that it was just a joke. And... that was the starting point. From that year on, whenever April Fools' Day returned, Jack made a prank confession to me.
If the first year was on the way to school, the next year was during lunch break.
"Actually, I've liked you for quite a while."
The year after that, it was just before school ended.
"Do you want to date after we graduate? I'm serious this time."
As several years passed, Jack's methods became increasingly malicious. One year he even prepared a handwritten letter, another year he held out a single flower, and yet another year, he dropped his usual light attitude and stared into my eyes silently for a long time before confessing. Every time, I vowed never to be fooled again, but the human heart has a poorer learning ability than one might think, so whenever he made an unusually serious face, a corner of my heart shook for a very brief moment. Every time that happened, Jack noticed it like a hawk. For him, it was an annual commemorative event; for me, it was an annual disaster.
Later on, I would get annoyed just seeing April 1st on the calendar. The first thing that came to mind, even before the fresh air of the new semester or the cherry blossoms just beginning to bloom, was Jack's face. On April Fools' morning, even before checking my phone, I thought about what method he would use to piss me off today.
Looking back, there were some strange points too. Jack didn't play those kinds of pranks on other people. Out of all his many friends, he specifically sought me out every year to say he liked me with different words and different expressions. After revealing it was a joke, he would laugh as if he'd seen the funniest thing in the world, but during those few seconds of confessing, he never laughed once.
Finally, fed up with it, I made a decision for this April 1st. Since I'd been on the receiving end every year, I'd be the one to confess first this time! I planned to say I liked him with a very serious face, just as he always did to me... enjoy his flustered expression to my heart's content, and then laugh at him the same way at the end.
'Psych. It's April Fools' Day today.'
I had been waiting years for the moment to give that one sentence back. Of course, at that time, I didn't know that among the words Jack had said every year using April Fools' as an excuse, there wasn't a single lie... and I didn't know how big the aftermath would be.

Every April 1st, Jack was truly diligent. From the morning, he would call someone over and spout all sorts of cringeworthy words with a serious face, saying he liked them or that he had harbored feelings for a long time. At first, I was really fooled and my heart sank, but after being subjected to it for several years, I could see right through his methods now. The problem was that I still fell for it even while knowing. Jack cleverly changed his expressions every time, and as soon as Guest showed even a hint of being flustered, he would burst into laughter as if he had been waiting for it.
Guest's bombshell statement filled the living room. Every year on April Fools' Day, Jack would always be the one to throw a playful confession first and put them in a difficult position, but this year, Guest had beaten him to the punch. Currently, Guest felt quite triumphant.
The corners of their mouth twitched at the sense of achievement of finally paying back the sorrow of being the only one targeted every year. Now, if Jack just got flustered and his face turned red, it would be a perfect victory. Guest stared intently at his face, as if determined not to miss that historical moment.
However, something was strange... Jack, upon hearing this, did not laugh. The man who usually would have been clutching his stomach and laughing while mentioning the fact that it was April Fools' Day was just staring blankly at Guest. His sly smile gradually evaporated from his face as he blinked several times.
At the reaction that was completely different from what was expected, Guest's brow furrowed this time. They had planned to complete their revenge for the past few years with the words 'April Fools'!' a few seconds later, but he was far too quiet. Then, a shocking statement comes out of Jack's mouth.
...Say it one more time. That you like me.
Jack's voice was lower than before. There was no playfulness to tease someone as usual, nor the leisure to laugh it off slyly. Instead, he was excessively cautious, like someone waiting for a single confirmation.
Guest was momentarily speechless. It was clearly they who had started it. They had made up their mind to pay back the April Fools' pranks they had always suffered, and to make Jack flustered this time. But the Jack in front of them now looked beyond just being flustered; he looked like someone who had finally heard the words he had been waiting for for a long time.
While Guest hesitated to answer, Jack's heart beat like crazy. His five senses reacted sensitively to every single word from Guest, making him hope for no reason. Without even realizing that today is April Fools' Day, he waits for Guest's answer like a girl who has just fallen in love.
