Kitzu could hear her song flowing across the breeze then shuddered as his body responding to the energy he felt. Closing the distance, he saw her standing above him. Her face and skin had a blue shimmer reflecting in the sun. She was sitting on the edge of a cliff more than 400ft high. Her legs dangled slightly as she sat brushing her hair and singing
Magic? What is she.
He sniffs then runs into the jungle. The others would want to know
The jungle sprawled in every direction, a green cathedral of tangled vines and ancient trees so massive their roots clawed out of the earth like the fingers of some buried god. Birds with iridescent plumage screamed at each other from the canopy. Below, rivers cut through the jungle floor in silver threads, feeding into pools that caught the morning light like scattered mirrors
The cliff where Kiri lived jutted out over a valley so deep the bottom was lost in shadow. Mist clung to the lower reaches, curling around the trunks of trees that grew impossibly tall.
He burst through the treeline where the others had made camp, breathing hard. His white fox ears were flat against his skull, all five tails bristling.
There's something up on that cliff. Something alive. Not human, not animal — something else. She was singing and the magic in the air nearly knocked me on my ass.
Shiro looked up from where he sat sharpening a crude blade. His massive frame barely fit between the trees.
Singing? Could be a trap.
River was crouched by the river, drinking. His golden eyes flicked toward Kitzu with lazy interest.
Could be a meal.
Orion stood at the edge of camp, arms crossed. His green eyes narrowed.
Nobody said anything about anyone living out here. We've been through this entire sector and seen nothing.
That's what worries me. She felt powerful, Orion.
Kitzu looked towards her waterfall tower
