Genin, jonin, merchants, and foreign shinobi crowded the streets as participants from multiple nations gathered for the upcoming Chūnin Exams. To most, it was a prestigious opportunity. A chance to earn promotion, prove strength, and bring honor to their village.
Beneath the excitement, however, darker intentions moved unseen.
Disguised as a Grass shinobi, Orochimaru passed through Konoha's gates without incident. The Legendary Sannin had come for his own reasons. The exams, the competitors, even the village itself were merely pieces upon a board. His true interest lay with a single Uchiha survivor whose potential had captured his attention, and the death of his former sensei he was looking forward to.
Everything was proceeding according to plan.
Or so he believed.
Golden eyes narrowed slightly as he sensed a familiar presence nearby—or rather, the absence of one.
No chakra.
No scent.
No trace detectable by any conventional means.
Yet Orochimaru knew.
Turning his gaze across the crowd, he found the source almost immediately.
A pale young man stood among the arriving shinobi as though he had always belonged there. Black hair threaded with deep crimson rested against equally dark clothing. His expression remained calm, unreadable, while dark eyes occasionally caught the light and revealed a faint blood-red sheen beneath.
